Most of the typing tests to be found on the web are all variations on the same theme, simple apps where you are asked to type a paragraph and are then provided with your WPM (words-per-minute) typing speed. These are very straight-forward, and they are your best bet if you are trying to determine your basic typing speed. However, if you are looking for something a little more interesting and challenging, there are two options out there that are more involved and a little less conventional. In these examples, you can enter into direct competition with friends or other players across the web.

#1) The Typing Test First and foremost is this 5-part, daily typing competition. Once you have created a free account you can login each day and compete in 5 typing challenges (each take about 1 minute) that will test your typing abilities in different ways. The content for each day’s game is the same for everyone who plays, so when you login the next day you can see how you fared relative to all the other players. Compete for daily titles, or play each day to vie for the session championship (each session of The Typing Test lasts for one [work] week).

#2) TypeRacer TypeRacer is the other stand-out typing test / competition. Although not as diverse as The Typing Test, it has the advantage of real-time head-to-head competition with other players. You can opt to compete against other random people, or you can invite your friends to a private battle with chat. At the end of each race it show you where you placed relative to other players and also provides you with your WPM typing speed.

These two are by far the most interesting of the lot. However, some of you may want take a basic typing test without all the bells and whistles. If that’s the case, here are the best sites offering tests to determine your WPM typing speed:
TypingTest.com – You can choose from several different test lengths (1, 2 or 3 minutes) and different topics for your text. At the end they will tell you your WPM and accuracy.
The Keyboard Playground – Several tests based on famous speeches and also one where you can enter your own text.
FreeTypingGame.net – There are a variety of typing tests here that emphasize different parts of the keyboard. Also available in several different languages.
